G4 Browser Shootout, what's the best browser for the PowerPC G4 systems

I took some time to test several different browsers on the G4 Mac Mini, including TenFourFox, Firefox, Camino, Aurorafox, Safari , and webkit. I tried them on youtube, facebook, gmail, and others. I also used speedbattle.com, sunspider, and the futuremark peacekeeper test.

@AcrOfSpades11 years ago I am currently watching this video using a PowerBook G4 (17 inch, 1.5 Ghz, 2 Gb RAM) and I am running the G4 optimized Camino. Originally, Youtube videos would play at about 15 frames per second. But, I have found a way to run videos at 20-30 frames per second! Simply open a video, and while it is playing, right click on it, and select settings. Then go to the little folder in the settings and set the allocated memory to maximum. Hope this helped; it worked for me! ... 2

I am thinking of getting a ppc cheap mac for my daughter but i guess ill need to get the latest one ie 2005 to see best results as i once tried a 2001 ibook (2yrs ago) and it just didn't work? ... 2

@asdfasdf4345artsdfg10 years ago For some time now, I've been using Leopard Webkit on my PowerMac G5 DP 2.0Ghz. I have actually found that the browser runs exceptionally well and I, more-or-less, feel like I am on a much more modern computer when I use it. It's up-to-date, opens and runs quickly, and can even run YouTube pretty well. (typing this comment from it right now). Video playback is decent, with a momentary skip every few seconds, but I believe that could depend on certain settings. As for Tiger Webkit, it seems to me that it (sadly) isn't updated as frequently or something. I cannot say for sure, as I haven't used it much, but I believe it's not the most up-to-date. TenFourFox works on anything 10.3(?) and up, which is good, but it's SUCH a slow browser. If you are running Leopard and want a good browser, I highly recommend Leopard Webkit. ... 6

@JackDD11 years ago Have you tried using Safari with the iPad user agent enabled for watching YouTube videos? You have to enable the Develop menu in Preferences > Advanced, and when you go to YouTube, you open the Develop menu and select the iPad user agent. Perfect way to avoid Flash Player there. ... 1

@geekygeek2211 years ago Opera is still available to PowerPC macs, I use Opera on my iMac g3 and it runs great. You can download an older version of it on oldapps.com they have programs from the beta version to the latest update. You should check it out sometime. ...

Camino is the fastest but it's no longer developed, the last firefox version that runs on tiger is as fast but many websites aren't displaying properly for some reason. Tenfourfox is similar to the latest firefox version used on modern machines and it supports add ons, but it is very slow. ...

@looking4awayout245 years ago Hello! Have you heard of the UOC Patch? It is a defaults replacement file I have made for Mozilla-based browsers that optimizes them for old hardware. It has an add on called UOC Enforcer that "enforces" some values that are hardcoded in the browsers in order to make them work better. I made the Patch for various codebases of Foxboxes: 38 ESR, 45 ESR and 52 ESR, although I recommend to use the 45 ESR version with Roytam1's Firefox 45 ESR fork since it has working APZ and tiled compositing. You can find out about the Patch and the Enforcer for Windows here:
I also worked jointly with the Macrumors guys in order to make a PowerPC exclusive version of the UOC Patch, called PowerUOC, aimed at Tenfourfox. Since you also own a Power Macintosh, thought you might give it a try:

@wrestletube18 years ago FireFox Aurora is actually the official latest alpha builds of FireFox. I don't get how you can get the latest nightly builds to work on a PPC still yet the latest final builds are always incompatible?!!!!?
I guess they make the alpha builds still compatible with the PPC's but strip away the compatabilitys when bringing out a final revision now thats silly if most people want to get final builds only but it's good that yu pointed the traick out if it still works for getting a later browser in 2016 on a Mac PPC that is as it may have stopped going that way after 2013. ... 4

If it were anything like chrome on modern mac laptops, it would be horrendous as far as memory and power consumption. 1gb of ram wouldn't satisfy that beast. It's not a bad browser, but it would not be a pleasant experience on a ppc mac. ...

@GOPACKERSJT11 years ago I've had 4 G5 mac's (two powermacs) and they've all had capacitor or liquid cooler issues that killed them. I seriously think the issues the G5 cpu had is why Apple switched to Intel. 2

@HajjCorp11 years ago Can you do a video where you show how to fix common iBook problems? Common ones: The push-button latch on iBooks always gets wobbly and vibrates whenever you click the mouse button, making it pretty annoying to use. Another problem is the keyboard membrane or something is bent, causing some keys near the bottom (spacebar, enter, Command) to be hard to press. I will try to think of others, but those are the two most common ones with mostly iBook G4s. ...
